For the past several days, all I’ve been able to think about is Cowboy Carter. As the great-grandbaby of a moonshine man (see “AMERICAN REQUIEM”), it’s amazing to see Beyoncé, an artist who is 30 years deep into her career, consistently give us new experiences, a history lesson, and genre-bending all in one album.

As soon as I got my hands on Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love album, I became obsessed with any performance of hers I could get my eyes on. From the VMAs where she revealed her pregnancy to watching Homecoming on Netflix on repeat, I have always been in awe of the Beyoncé show. Cowboy Carter is special for Beyoncé fans in this same way, but it also has an even greater impact, especially on me. It makes me feel closer to ancestors I’ve never met while also teaching me about a side of my culture that I’m not as familiar with. This looks like feeling a sense of closeness to my great grandparents, who were farmers and business people in rural South Carolina.

Fans and critics alike are already obsessed with Cowboy Carter, too. In one weekend, the album earned a 92 on Metacritic, and Beyoncé became the first Black artist in history to occupy the entire top 15 of the US Apple Music Country Chart. Online, fans have already created thousands of videos—from dancing on horses to creating their own line dances. Of course, chatter has already started about whether this album will be up for the big awards when next year’s awards season rolls around.

If you ask me, Beyoncé’s legacy was cemented long, long ago, but this album means so much more to fans than just a collection of top hits. It’s changing the music industry as we know it. Let’s get into why:

Why Beyoncé going country matters

Growing up in Houston profoundly influenced Beyoncé’s early work. In the Destiny’s Child days, her mother (affectionately known as Miss Tina) made a majority of the group’s outfits often with western themes to pay homage to their Texas upbringing. The style continued to weave its way through her career. We saw western themes in music videos, album releases, tour outfits, and fashion drops (does anyone else remember the Adidas x Ivy Park Rodeo release?!). TL;DR? Western style is nothing new for Beyoncé or her ever-evolving career.

Beyoncé is not new to criticism but in a post on Instagram, she tells us this record is a result of an experience she felt unwelcome in. Fans can trace this back to the 2016 CMAs when notable country artists walked out of her performance with The Chicks when they performed “Daddy Lessons” from the Lemonade album. In hindsight, that song was just a teaser of what she was capable of in the country genre. And now, after listening to Cowboy Carter, it’s clear that the feelings and effects of this experience are all over this album. She brings in the legacy of her ancestors, artists who have changed genres successfully, and outright iconic country legends like Dolly Parton and Wille Nelson to balance doubt and disbelief from critics.

Country music originated in the Black community, and I couldn’t stop thinking about that as I listened to the album. And Beyoncé doesn’t let you forget either. When white singers rose to popularity in the country genre, this became a forgotten piece of history, though. For a mainstream artist to strike back so creatively, against the establishment that created this closed door on country music for years, is powerful. So much so, that I teared up listening to “AMERICAN REQUIEM” and “AMEN” on my first listen where she repeatedly asks “Can you hear me or do you fear me?”

The inclusion of Linda Martell was especially fun to see in the tracklist. She was the first Black female artist to be commercially successful in country music and to play the Grand Ole Opry. Even though she left the country music industry in the 70s, she was the inspiration for more Black artists to recreate the country lane for themselves. It’s exciting that Beyoncé can bring a legend like this back into the limelight in a way that adds context to the not-so-hidden gems on this album.

Another jolt of inspiration on this album is the almost family reunion aspect of including current Black artists in the space like Willie Jones, Tanner Adell, Tiera Kennedy, and Brittney Spencer. These artists have made waves in country music by creating a lane that is still kept behind golden gates. Beyoncé doesn’t just acknowledge these artists either, by including them on her album, she’s playing chess not checkers. She’s aware of her impact (she is The Queen, after all) and by including these younger artists, she’s shining a light on the the hard work they’ve already been putting into the genre. Alternatively, we have to look at the songs with Miley Cyrus and Post Malone. She brings in white artists who’ve received criticism for moving through more traditionally Black genres like R&B and hip-hop (I’ll never forget where I was during Miley’s Bangerz era.) Bringing them in notes that we should be aware that Black artists aren’t the only ones who face harsh criticism when they try new things in this industry.

Beyoncé delivered again what so few artists can do: an experience that can’t be singularly defined.

When it comes to Beyoncé’s work, there’s always more to unwrap, so I will continue to sit on this album, but so far, my ultimate takeaway is that Beyoncé delivered again what so few artists can do: an experience that can’t be singularly defined. A genre-less album with roots in Country Black culture—a culture that already has its arms spread across every genre when you dive deeper. For example, if you look at groups like Migos or albums like Ariana Grande’s Sweetener and Thank u, next, southern trap music has clearly influenced mainstream pop music. If you look at rock, The Beatles, Elvis, and Bob Dylan all drew from Black influences to create new sounds. The electric guitar rose to popularity because of artists like Chuck Berry (who’s also featured on Cowboy Carter).

It’s not just a country album—it’s a Beyoncé album

After going through the whole album, I was able to immediately pick out the country, rock and roll (“YA YA”), hip-hop (“SPAGHETTI”), gospel (“AMEN”), opera (“DAUGHTER”), and many other influences that made me want to listen again and again. She told us this is a Beyoncé album, not a country album, and she delivered. Country is underlying everything on this album that we know Beyoncé to already be good at like layering her impressive voice and moving from ballad to bop in the span of just a few moments.

Songs like “YA YA” and “BODYGUARD” made me immediately ready to put my cowboy boots on and dance all summer long. The groovy basslines, the rodeo announcer getting us ready for the big event, and the general Beyoncé flair for the theatrical had me rolling my windows down. Meanwhile, I could shift into the emotional weight of songs like “PROTECTOR” and “16 CARRIAGES” where she outright tells us “You’ll remember me, cause we got something to prove.”

The music she creates is inherently country because of her Texas and Louisiana roots even if the establishment of mostly white artists don’t think so.

Is Cowboy Carter AOTY?

The Grammys were only a month ago, but next year’s AOTY competition is already heating up. A creator on TikTok sparked conversation 24 hours after the album came out, saying that there may be backlash if this album doesn’t win Album of the Year at the Grammys. Beyoncé is the most nominated female artist in Grammy history and broke the record for most wins to date in 2023 (with 32 overall). But during the 2023 awards season, it became apparent that many Grammy voters didn’t vote for Beyonce because she was winning “all the time.” Despite her previous wins, she has been nominated for Album of the Year four times and has never won (losing to Beck, Adele, Harry Styles, and Taylor Swift, respectively.) Even Beyoncé’s husband Jay Z, referenced during his acceptance speech for a global impact award that the Grammy’s decision metrics “didn’t work.” Since then, the online conversation has lit up with takes on how industry awards often nominate and invite popular Black artists for ratings but are not inclined to actually award them.

This album is a love project than anything else—a group of songs that Beyoncé crafted over five years that helped prove her point to the industry: The music she creates is inherently country because of her Texas and Louisiana roots even if the establishment of mostly white artists don’t think so. And I think that’s the point of the whole album, AOTY or not, played on country stations or not, Cowboy Carter is an excellent album. It’s also a country album. Most, importantly, it’s a Beyoncé album. And the artist herself said it best, “If that ain’t country, tell me what is.”

It’s a question every woman has mulled over at one point or another: Am I a Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, or Charlotte? After And Just Like That triggered a wave of Sex and the City re-watches over the past couple of years, it’s a question that’s on our minds now as much as it was back in the ’90s when the show originally aired. (Which is fair, considering it says just as much about someone as any zodiac placement or enneagram type). And after two-plus decades, SATC’s lessons on friendship and love still stand strong—as do all four leading ladies’ signature styles.

Sex and the City costume designer Patricia Field managed to develop wardrobes for each character that made their style as distinctive as their personalities and that were as much of a part of their identities as their careers and love lives. Carrie’s eclectic, often disjointed style made her a pop-culture phenom that has remained consistently relevant since the ’90s; Samantha’s strong, sexy style was as unapologetically true to herself as her “I am not the type of woman who sits at home and waits for a man” philosophies. But until recently, Charlotte York Goldenblatt’s style has flown painfully under the radar.

Charlotte’s WASP-y, preppy style might not have been quite as in-your-face as her friends’ were, but its I-just-left-Ralph-Lauren, old-money quality has an advantage in its timelessness. She was a spokesperson for knowing what she liked and staying true to it in more ways than one and was a pioneer of the “quiet luxury” aesthetic years before it was coined. Her style managed to be both classic and completely unique, a combination that’s always sought-after but rarely nailed.

While all of Charlotte’s outfits could easily be worn today—both due to the resurgence of ’90s and Y2K fashion and its classic appeal—my personal recent re-watch got me thinking: What would Charlotte York wear if she were created in 2024? I’m no Patricia Field, but I have some ideas.

wedge heels (budget-friendly option) | halter top | jeans | halter top | clutch (budget-friendly option) | earrings

While Charlotte largely stuck to her Elizabeth Taylor-inspired style, one detail she loved to sneak into her looks was a good cowl neck. This silky, cowl-necked halter top screams “Charlotte York’s out on the town,” especially paired with a dark-wash denim and trendy, oversized clutch. Miss York would adore the fact that wedges are back and would celebrate it with this fabulous floral pair.

dress | clutch (budget-friendly option) | earrings

As a certified WASP, Charlotte had a calendar full of events most of us only have once a year. Galas, charity events, fancy dates—the girl was busy. For her next formal event, she’d love the shape and structure of this Cult Gaia dress, which would perfectly enhance the hourglass shape she loved to play up. She’d complete it with trendy—but still classic!—gold accessories for a look that would make any cardiologist’s heart skip a beat.

tennis bag | polo | skirt | sneakers | bracelet

Another trend Charlotte was (way) ahead of the curve on? Tenniscore. The girl loved to be on the courts, and she’d have no shortage of tennis outfit options in 2024. I believe she’d still be rocking a feminine, baby-pink polo with a classic white tennis skirt, but since she definitely wasn’t afraid of color, she’d add some green into the mix, too. Of course, she’d have a monogrammed tennis bag that she took straight from the country club to brunch with her friends.

earrings | dress | heels | bag

Charlotte York specialized in pieces that were sexy but somehow would still be acceptable to meet her future Mother-in-Law in. This form-fitting, slinky white dress would have been the perfect base for one of her Friday night ensembles, especially with a classic pair of slip-on heeled mules for a result that’s classic but far from boring.

top | skirt | sunglasses | earrings | flats

If Charlotte was running around in 2024, I think she’d be telling everyone who’d listen that ballet flats weren’t “back” because they never went out of style. For a busy day of running errands and socializing, Charlotte would wear an off-the-shoulder top with an A-line maxi skirt, then complete it with a pair of (probably Chanel) ballet flats. She’d keep to the color-sandwiching palette with a white top-handle bag and black sunglasses that Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy would approve of.

Even after my millionth time streaming It’s Complicated, I find myself fawning over the masterfully crafted kitchen in Meryl Streep’s character’s Santa Barbara home. It’s truly the kitchen of my dreams, and if you’re here, I think it’s safe to say that it may be yours, too. I’m captivated by each and every detail, from the tucked-away lamps to the open shelves stacked with dishware to the mossy green centerpiece on the dining table. Watching this movie is quite literally escapism. So, in an attempt to re-create what many of us have probably had on our Pinterest boards for years, I tracked down affordable products that’d help me transform my kitchen into a Nancy Meyers set that I’d love waking up to every day. If you still love the It’s Complicated kitchen after all these years, here’s everything you need to nail the look at home.

1. A Hanging Pot Rack

I’d just like to begin by saying sign me up for any opportunity to free up more storage space in my 700-square-foot apartment. I’ve got pans tucked away inside the oven, hanging out in the dishwasher, toppling over in the closet, and overflowing out of cupboards. But instead of trying to stash them all behind closed doors, why not store pots and pans out in the open with a hanging rack? This fixture can bring an elegant, Nancy Meyers-inspired touch to any kitchen while offering the piece of organization you never knew you needed. One major perk is that you can purchase as many hooks as your preferred rack will allow to maximize your use.

2. Serving Boards

The It’s Complicated kitchen was crafted for a woman who loves making huge feasts for her family, bakes three different types of pie for her friends, and sets an immaculate table for a romantic dinner with her steamy fling. Jane is truly a hostess at heart, and one kitchen tool you see every time she has guests over is a serving board. Whether you use it for actually prepping ingredients, plating up a convenient girl dinner spread, or serving hors d’oeuvres when guests come over, a classic wood cutting board is so versatile. And when you’re not using it, you can simply lean the board against your kitchen backsplash for instant decor.

3. A Cake Stand and Treats

There’s no better way to cozy up your kitchen than with a display of freshly baked treats. True to her baker nature, main character Jane displays all sorts of mouth-watering cakes, pastries, and breads throughout her kitchen. To take a page from her book, spend a Sunday morning baking up a fresh batch of cookies or throw something sweet on your grocery list, then pop it onto a cake stand to display. Look for one with a glass dome to keep things fresh, or choose a simple pedestal for easy serving.

4. Neutral Dishware

Maximalists, hear me out. Colorful plates and bowls can be super fun, but for a classic choice that will always feel timeless, opt for neutral dishware. Especially if your kitchen has open shelves like those in the film, sticking to mostly white or off-white dishes will give the space a more cohesive look. And if you only have closed-door cabinets, you can still nail the look by adding a couple of stacks of neutral plates and bowls tucked in the corner of your countertop or under an exposed kitchen cart.

5. Potted Herbs

You’ll never believe that many of the It’s Complicated kitchen scenes were filmed mid-winter on a sound stage in New York City as opposed to the summery Santa Barbara illusion we all fell for. One aspect that makes the set look especially realistic is the presence of potted herbs. This is such an easy way to bring the outdoors in. Simply line a sun-exposed area of your kitchen with mini planters and nurture your own herb garden. Plants like basil and mint are easy to grow and can supply fresh ingredients when you’re whipping up a seasonal dish or refreshing beverage. To mimic the kitchen’s neutral color scheme, choose pots in materials like terracotta and ceramic.

6. High-Quality Cookware

What I admire most about Meyers’ designs is that they are delightfully inviting without sacrificing functionality. Let’s not forget that the kitchen is for cooking, but no one said you couldn’t do it in style. Since Jane is a professional baker and a keen home chef, naturally, her kitchen features a large collection of pots and pans. Investing in your own high-quality (and cute) cookware is a purchase that could last a lifetime and help you romanticize the simple act of cooking dinner. Also, don’t feel like everything has to be matchy-matchy either—mixing metals is totally Nancy Meyers-approved!

7. Crocks Full of Wooden Utensils

If you’re going for the Nancy Meyers look, this is not the time to hide everything away in a drawer. For easy access while you’re cooking and a more lived-in look, store your cooking utensils in a ceramic crock on the counter. And if you’re trying to channel your inner Jane Adler, opt for wooden utensils instead of plastic or silicone ones. The warm wood tones will contrast the cooler look of common kitchen materials like stainless steel and marble.

8. A Kitchen Cart or Island

If you’re looking for a way to majorly transform your kitchen without turning your space into a construction zone, a kitchen cart or movable island might be just what you need. The piece you choose doesn’t have to be as grandiose as the marble-topped one in the film to make this a worthwhile kitchen investment. Even a small cart or island can provide extra counter space for meal prep, add storage for dishes or cookware, and even serve as bar-style seating for guests. Not to mention, it’s a great place to have a flirty conversation over some croque monsieurs and lavender ice cream.

9. Fruit Bowls

Putting fresh produce on display is one of the easiest ways to give your kitchen a Nancy Meyers look. It instantly adds a pop of color to your kitchen countertop or table, and it literally takes seconds to throw together. Grab a few large serving bowls (stoneware or wood pieces are best if you want to match Jane’s vibe), then pile them high with citrus fruits, bananas, or apples and pears.

10. A Glass Pitcher

Even if it’s just for pouring yourself a glass of iced tea like Jane does near the opening of the film, a glass pitcher is a simple way to romanticize your kitchen. Whether you’re usually alone or constantly having company over, you can easily embody her effortless hostess vibe with an iced-down pitcher of your beverage of choice. Bonus points if you have some lemon slices on hand to pop in as garnish.

11. Patterned Cushions

A vital part of Meyers’ set designs is a stylish yet comfy-cozy ambience, and that extends to the kitchen. Take a cue from Jane’s kitchen seating and spruce up your chairs or counter stools with some decorative cushions. If your seats are made from a hard material like wood, plastic, or metal, tying on some cushions is an easy (and affordable) way to update the look while adding some extra comfort. Your bum will thank you for it.

It’s been four years since lockdown, and while we all spent a good portion of that time working from the comfort of our couches, many of us have officially made the transition back to our offices (at least in a hybrid capacity). As if work clothes weren’t hard enough to begin with, after years of leggings and sweatshirts being work uniforms, it’s natural for “I have absolutely no idea how to get dressed for work” to cross your mind before your 9-to-5.

But here’s a little secret: Your work wardrobe doesn’t have to be separate from your day-to-day one. You can fill your closet with pieces that work for both, and that fit your personal style—meaning workwear won’t feel like such a strain. Oversized button-ups, relaxed trousers, and versatile dresses can be the makings of your office looks and weekend wear alike.

Trying to nail down a few work uniforms to make your morning routine a little easier? These pieces will work for your 9-to-5 and beyond.

The post People Are Swearing This 30-Day Manifestation Challenge Completely Changed Their Life appeared first on The Everygirl.

]]>
Anything that promises you’ll double your income and transform your life sounds like a manifestation gimmick, but it only took one month for that to become a reality for TikTok creator Kristen Such after a 30-day journey she called the “Dr. Joe Dispenza Challenge.” Dr. Joe Dispenza is a world-renowned epigenetics, quantum physics, and neuroscience researcher and best-selling author of books such as You Are the Placebo: Making Your Mind Matter and Becoming Supernatural. Over the past decade, Dr. Dispenza has been a leading educator on the function of the human brain and how to reprogram thinking through scientifically proven neuro-physiologic principles. The modern-day wellness pioneer proves thoughts and emotions create your reality, offering a scientific explanation for manifestation.

From wellness celebs such as Lauryn Bosstick and Maria Menounos to millions of devotees all over the world, Dispenza’s work and meditations have been deemed “life-changing.” “I am a whole new person,” Menounos claimed on her podcast after attending a popular Dr. Dispenza retreat. “I am completely new.”

Such’s 30-Day Challenge gathered popularity because it’s much more affordable than a retreat and much more attainable than an extensive meditation practice, but its followers are claiming impressive benefits. “I have already manifested so much abundance,” said one TikToker who tried the challenge (known as @nicolavarlamos_ on TikTok). “I’ve signed clients, I’ve woken up to sales in my business… And, most importantly, I’m feeling very different.” Another TikTok creator, Annalise Johnson, said, “I’ve completely rewired my mind, changed my life, and changed my identity.” Convinced? Keep reading to find out everything you need to know to try the Dr. Joe Dispenza Challenge yourself.

What is The 30-Day Dr. Joe Dispenza Challenge?

After a breakup, Such decided to commit to Dr. Dispenza’s meditations to feel better: She created a 30-day chart in Apple Notes and listed what she wanted to manifest. After 30 consecutive days, she received many more benefits than bouncing back from heartbreak. In a series of TikTok videos, Such claimed the meditations changed her life by doubling her income, manifesting new friendships, and transforming her mood after 30 days. Dr. Dispenza shares four types of meditation (sitting, standing, walking, and lying down) with guidance and sound that’s scientifically backed to rewire the brain. In a video, Such explained that even the particular tone he uses helps you get back into theta and gamma frequency, which is the brain state when you’re “manifesting” or self-reprogramming.

All you need to try The Challenge is 15-60 minutes every morning (or evenings if mornings are difficult) and a few different Dr. Dispenza meditations. Such says you can’t go wrong with any meditation, but highlighted her favorites in a video, depending on her needs. Looking to increase abundance or attract money and opportunity? Such creditsGenerating Abundance Meditation” for helping her double her income (she does it three times a week). If you’re not used to meditating, Such suggested going with the “Morning and Evening Meditations,” which she refers to as a starter pack (they’re about 16-20 minutes each). To achieve any other goal, rewire your mindset, or transform your mood, Such recommended “Changing Boxes” (the short version is 26 minutes) or “Tuning Into New Potentials” (59 minutes).

Dr. Dispenza’s meditations are for purchase on his website or Amazon. A few meditations (such as this 54-minute walking meditation) can be found for free on YouTube, which may be a good place to start to test out if Dr. Dispenza’s meditations feel right for you, but many creators agreed YouTube was not always reliable, as the available meditations are not specific and other videos you might find online may not actually be by Dr. Dispenza. While The Challenge is originally intended for 30 consecutive days, do what feels right to you, whether that means trying it out for a week or challenging yourself to go for 60 days.

“Your thoughts and beliefs may create your actions, but your actions create your reality.”

How does it work?

Change your negative thoughts

Dr. Dispenza’s meditations work by rewiring negative thoughts, therefore allowing you to rewire your life. “How you think and feel creates your state of being,” Dispenza explained on The Ed Mylett Show. The meditations teach you to observe your thoughts, identify what thoughts are self-limiting, and then change them. Dr. Dispenza’s research shows that when you practice replacing emotions like fear, anxiety, and pain with elevated emotions of joy, gratitude, and love for 10 minutes three times a day, you change your mood, break the stress response, and teach your body to feel safe enough to be in the present.

Visualize what you want

The meditations also use visualization, which is the key to manifesting thoughts into reality. “The act of mentally rehearsing something when you’re truly present, your brain does not know the difference between what’s going on out there and what’s going on in here,” Dispenza conveyed on the School of Greatness podcast. Whatever it is that you desire—more money, a lasting relationship, happiness—imagine yourself already having it, take notice of the feeling of it being fulfilled, and hold onto and apply it. The key piece of success with The Challenge is repeatedly doing these meditations to repeat the visualization. “When you’ve ‘experienced’ an event numerous times by mentally rehearsing every aspect of it in your mind, you feel what that event would feel like before it unfolds,” Dr. Dispenza illustrated in Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself.

… And then take action

While followers of The Challenge swear by results after 30 days, it shouldn’t be used as a quick or easy fix. The most important part of The Challenge is that you apply the emotions, visualizations, and thoughts you experience during the meditations to your everyday life to take action that creates your desires into reality. The Dr. Joe Dispenza Challenge is not magic; your income doesn’t automatically double, your health won’t automatically heal, and your soulmate won’t automatically appear because you sat still for 20 minutes a day.

Your thoughts and beliefs may create your actions, but your actions create reality. Intentional manifestation requires effort to de-program what’s no longer serving you. For example, the meditations may have helped Such get rid of limiting beliefs holding her back from making more money, which then allowed her actions to change to allow her to make more money. BTW, if you don’t manifest your desires at the end of the 30 days (i.e., you didn’t make more money or get healthier), it’s not that The Challenge was a waste; it just likely means you have more work to do. The bottom line: Your thoughts create your reality. Whether it’s a 30-day Dr. Joe Dispenza Challenge or going to weekly therapy, put in the effort to make sure your thoughts are serving you instead of holding you back.

If you’ve recently found yourself on the side of TikTok that’s obsessed with doing your makeup according to your zodiac sign, welcome to the club. We’ve long been intrigued by the prospect of dressing according to your birth chart, and now, the beauty industry has hopped on the astrology-inspired bandwagon. If all of this is completely new to you, allow me to explain. Your rising sign, also known as your Ascendant, is the part of your birth chart that dictates how other people perceive you, and part of how people perceive you is, like it or not, your physical appearance. Therefore, some astrologers insist that certain aspects of your appearance, including your facial features and bone structure, can be attributed to your rising sign.

From water signs who will want to lean into the drama to earth signs who should opt for more neutral tones, doing your makeup according to your rising zodiac sign just might change the way you feel about your day-to-day routine. Above all, though, tailoring your makeup to your rising sign provides you with a fun new way to experiment with your products, which is what it’s all about, right? Here’s how you can best emphasize your features with your makeup look, according to your rising sign.

Not sure what your rising sign is? You can calculate it here.

Aries

rising sign

Aries are fire signs, which means that as you do your makeup, you should opt for looks that capture your energy and confidence. You’ll want to choose lighter, brighter colors to emphasize your features rather than leaning into darker tones; for example, you should pick a bright red or orange lip for a pop of color rather than a vampy burgundy. An Aries rising can also lean into allllll the glitter looks to emphasize their internal passion.

Taurus

rising sign
Source: @matejanova

A Taurus rising’s makeup should be all about perfecting a flawless base. Find a foundation that gives you that glowing-from-within feeling, plus a pigmented blush that’ll give a natural flush. Since Taureans are earth signs, opt for a more grounded color palette, meaning softer, neutral eye shadow and natural-looking nude lips.

Gemini

venus sign
Source: @oliviarodrigo

Ah, Gemini—the most versatile sign of the zodiac. As a Gemini rising, you can (and should) pick out natural contrasts in your makeup looks to emphasize your adaptability. A bold red lip with no mascara? Done. Two different tones of eye shadow? That’s right up your alley. Since Geminis are air signs, your makeup should highlight your overall flexibility and go-with-the-flow nature.

Cancer

rising sign
Source: @selenagomez

Cancers are known for being soft-hearted zodiac signs, and a Cancer rising will have facial features that illustrate that softness. In order to best compliment this, choose rich, neutral tones when doing your makeup, like taupe, mauve, and brown; from eyeshadow to lip liner, these will help your makeup reflect your internal emotionality. When you put together your base, lean into the emotional intensity you naturally bring and opt for a pop of color in your blush.

Leo

venus sign
Source: @daniellemarcan

As a Leo rising, we already know that you have your hair routine down to a T, but when it comes to makeup, don’t be afraid to go for a similar level of drama. You’re a fire sign, so your makeup looks should reflect that with deep reds and oranges. Whether you choose to incorporate those into eye shadow looks, blush, or lip colors is up to you. On the flip side, if you want to just focus on your gorgeous mane and go makeup-free, that works, too.

Virgo

venus sign
Source: @menzabolamba

Virgo risings will look best in makeup that’s natural, refined, and classic—anything “old money” or “clean girl” inspired will be right up your alley and highlight your features well. As an Earth sign, you’ll benefit from using greens, browns, and greys in your makeup looks—just make sure to use a light hand when applying in order to communicate your knack for simplicity.

Libra

venus sign
Source: @reneerapp

Libras are known for being artistic yet indecisive, so they can afford to switch up makeup vibes frequently. When it comes to your day-to-day, though, opt for incorporating subtle, neutral shimmer for some understated excitement. Think: A pop of gold glitter on your eyelids or a soft highlighter that emphasizes your cheekbones.

Scorpio

venus sign
Source: @jennaortega

Scorpio rising signs have strong, bold features, so don’t be afraid of getting dramatic with your makeup look. This year’s grunge makeup trend is right up your alley—dark eyeliner, dramatic lips, and deep shades of burgundy and purple will look great on you. If smokey eyes aren’t your thing, lean into a subtle cat-eye or a bold red lip to capture your inner intensity.

Sagittarius

venus sign
Source: @kelliecarollo

If you’re a Sagittarius rising, hear me out: You can rock a bold brow in a way that won’t make you look like it’s 2016, which is a rare achievement. Focus on the drama for your makeup look with over-lined lips or dramatic eyeliner. You’ll want to keep your base more simplistic and neutral to allow your bolder features, from a dark red lip to face-framing brows, to take the stage.

Capricorn

venus sign
Source: @zey.ca

Capricorn risings will want to communicate their internal seriousness and intelligence with their makeup looks. Since you’re an Earth sign, choose neutral shades of eyeshadow and blush, and opt for structured looks that are both practical and timeless. If there’s one sign that fits the “office siren” makeup trend perfectly, it’s totally a Capricorn rising.

Aquarius

venus sign
Source: @sza

Remember a few years ago when face gems and super-glittery looks were trending because of Euphoria? Aquarius risings were made for that. Complement a simple, glowy base with eye-catching accents like blue mascara, a face gem or two, or brightly colored eyeshadow. TL;DR: This year’s blue eyeshadow trend is calling your name.

Pisces

venus sign
Source: @allanaramaa

Last but certainly not least, Pisces risings are the quintessential water signs; you’ll want to lean into colors that emphasize your emotional intelligence and romantic leanings. Use soft pastels in your eye shadow and blush, and definitely opt for as glowy of a base as possible. If you want to add a little extra oomph, opt for subtle falsies to emphasize your eyes.

I don’t like to make assumptions, but I’ll go out on a limb here and say that most of us have a love-hate relationship with lunch. And nothing’s worse than groggily suffering through the second half of the work day, struggling to keep your eyes open and stay focused. However, now that warmer weather is on the horizon, there’s no better time to swap out heavy comfort meals in favor of some lighter options. To ease that dreaded mid-afternoon slump, we’ve rounded up the 22 best light lunch recipes that’ll keep you full and focused for the rest of the day. Keep scrolling to learn more.

The post Being a Little ‘Delulu’ Can Help You Accomplish Your Biggest Goals appeared first on The Everygirl.

]]>
I’m no stranger to “being delusional.” I mean, I got a degree in music theatre, and I actively play professional dress-up for a living, so I have to live in the delulu at least a little bit for the sake of my career. But even before I entered into the performing arts, leaning into my delusion was crucial for me to believe that I could make it in such an unpredictable industry—especially since I entered into it during COVID, which we know was precisely when every theatre basically shut down. While some might have called it a day and changed their career path, I found an absurd amount of delusion (or what I like to call courage), and I stuck to what I loved to do. Now, I write professional pretender on my taxes.

So when I say I’m a little delulu, I don’t mean that I spend my life tricking myself into believing that I’m going to marry every cutie I run into at the airport (although I have and will continue to do that). Instead, I mean that I believe in my wildest dreams, knowing that consistency, courage, hard work, and a ruthlessly optimistic mindset can help me achieve them.

So, like a big sister or the bad influence friend your parents warned you about (you decide), I’m sharing how you too can lean into your delulu so that you can start checking off some of your dreams on your vision board—no matter how big or far out of reach they seem.

What does it mean to be delusional?

If you look up the definition of delusional, Merriam-Webster gives a rather pessimistic view of the word: something that is falsely or delusively believed or propagated. We’ve all thrown the word delusional around from time to time—like when your bestie goes on about the various reasons why their Hinge match isn’t responding or how they’re saving money for a trip to Mexico because it’s cheaper than therapy.

To be honest, I used to view delusion as an insult and that being “in my own little world” was a bad thing, but it wasn’t until recently that I considered a different definition of the word that is less negative and rather rooted in optimism and bravery. Being “delulu” nowadays means less about being unrealistic and more about having an insane amount of self-courage and belief that you are capable of achieving whatever you set your mind to.

How can being “delulu” benefit you?

In doing some research about finding a job in the performing arts (and outside of it because, you know, COVID), I came across a survey done by LinkedIn that stated men apply to jobs they are only 60 percent qualified for, while women tend to only apply to jobs they are 100 percent qualified for. What in the patriarchy is this?! I did feel unqualified for the jobs I wanted to apply to, even though I was more than halfway done with my degree at the time, and I was tempted to just throw in the towel. But at the same time, while I believe some men could benefit from a little modesty, I knew the only way to turn this mojo dojo casa house around was to learn from men’s delusion and start gaining the courage to apply to jobs I didn’t think I was qualified for anyway.

Being qualified is as much about having the right mindset as it is about having experience and accolades. In my case, having a degree in music may seem unconventional, but it taught me how to problem-solve, be detail-oriented, think fast on my feet, and manage high-stress situations… all skills that are highly sought after at a more “practical” occupation if I had to go that route. Realizing this made me think, “How unqualified could I really be?!

Stepping into your delulu can give the extra push you need to make progress toward your biggest goals.

If you’re interested in a job or you’re wildly passionate about something, you’ll automatically put more energy and effort into it than someone who would rather be doing anything else—and that will show. So, whether it’s a job you’re after or a hard-to-reach goal, brainstorm what it will take to get to it. Then, think about what you already have going for you and consider what overlaps between the two. Soon, you’ll see that the connection is much less daunting, and your goal could actually be achievable. Basically, in doing this, you’ll realize that what you’re lacking is enough delusion (AKA a beautiful concoction of courage, patience, and determination) and not the actual qualifications that it takes to achieve your goals.

What can happen when you step into your delusion?

When I changed my mindset from thinking I was unqualified to thinking, “Why not me? Why wouldn’t it work out?” I started to walk into interviews believing that I deserved a seat at the table. My newfound courage and confidence allowed me to show my curiosity, ambition, and relentless work ethic—which I wouldn’t have done if I let myself believe I wasn’t good enough or qualified enough to be there. Stepping into your delulu can give you the extra push you need to make progress toward your biggest goals. And as soon as you change your thought process to believing in yourself, you give others permission to believe in you, too.

Whether you’re climbing the corporate ladder or pounding the pavement trying to get someone important to see your art, your delulu can help you open new doors. Have you been waiting an eternity to make partner? You actually are capable of starting your own firm. Are you having trouble getting someone to cast you? Perhaps it’s time to produce a one-person show. Did your male coworker get a raise, and you didn’t? A meeting with your boss to discuss why you deserve one, too, is imperative.

Being qualified is as much about having the right mindset as it is about having experience and accolades.

Even though the things you set your mind to can be intimidating at times, being a little delusional that everything will work out can give you the courage to go for it. This doesn’t mean that you’re skipping the hard work that it will take—it just means that you’re brave enough to take on that hard work because you know you’re capable of achieving your dream life.

Final thoughts

Delusion doesn’t equal skipping important steps—I’m not going to try to sweet-talk my way into becoming a surgeon… that would be bad for all parties involved. The point is to be delusional in what you think you are capable of accomplishing. To be delusional into thinking someone will take a chance on you. To be delusional into thinking that your resume five years post-grad is competitive with someone 25 years post-grad.

Everyone successful that you look up to had to be a little delusional to think they could get to the top and that they were the best person for the job. So be delulu, and you’ll soon realize that the delusion isn’t actually that far from the truth. Also, remember the TikTok trend going around right now, “How hard can it be? Boys do it.” So, really, how hard can it be to be delusional? Boys do it!

The post I’m an Indecisive 2025 Bride—Help Me Pick My Wedding Aesthetic appeared first on The Everygirl.

]]>
When my fiancé got down on one knee last September, I was on cloud nine and in a dreamy, congratulatory haze that extended a full 48 hours before the wedding planning-related questions came barreling through my door. Inquiries of when our wedding would be, what city we’d celebrate in, what wedding aesthetic we’d aim for, and how many bridesmaids I planned to have worked their way into every unassuming conversation, and suddenly, I became hyperaware of the fact that my indecisiveness was going to make the wedding planning process…quite the challenge.

As the token come-back-to-me-because-I’m-still-deciding friend at any restaurant we attend, the modern-day wedding to-do list and all the decisions that come with it are enough to send me into a tizzy. With the birth of WeddingTok and with how extra the wedding industry has gotten over the years, I’m hit daily with a plethora of bachelorette and wedding inspo that makes narrowing down what I want even more challenging.

As soon as we secured our industrial-meets-elegant Chicago venue last month, the big-day countdown began, and each tick of the clock mocked me as the wedding decisions (and dollar signs) began to pile up. Per my wedding planner, my next steps are to send out Save The Dates, and though I don’t have to send out invitations for a hot minute, I do want my invitation suite and the overall vibe of the wedding to feel cohesive, and, most importantly, like us. I sorted through my embarrassingly long wedding Pinterest board to nail down my aesthetic, and thankfully there is a stunning array of products from Minted to fit whatever direction we decide to go in.

Why I’m choosing Minted for my wedding stationery and beyond

If you haven’t gotten the vibe just yet, I’ll sum it up: I need as much help as I can get when it comes to crossing wedding to-dos off of my list. I’ve heard whispers that Minted was the premiere destination for all things wedding printing, and after shopping around, I’m going with Minted for these reasons and more:

 • Affordability: When I heard how much invitation suites can cost, I nearly lost consciousness and needed to excuse myself to have a quick scream into my pillow. I considered designing them and printing them on my own, but after crunching some numbers and talking to my coworkers who went that route, I realized I wouldn’t be saving much money at all—and that isn’t even accounting for the mistakes I’d likely make (not to mention a subpar result). I always assumed Minted’s incredible quality and on-trend designs would be out of my budget, but after looking into it and learning how much support they give to their customers, I learned that the cost is not only 100 percent worth it but so much less expensive than I thought it would be. Plus, if you can get your hands on a coupon code, it makes the deal even sweeter. Right now, you can use code EVERYGIRLWED for 25% off of Save the Dates and 15% off of invites (through May 1st), so def take advantage of that if you’re in the market!
 • Everything you need, in one place: If I’m outsourcing my wedding printing, I need the company to be able to do it all and Minted fits the bill. Beyond Save the Dates and wedding invitation suites, Minted also offers free wedding websites(!), menus, table numbers, programs, favors, and more.
 • Customer support: As someone who can appreciate wedding visuals but has absolutely no experience in graphic design or printing anything beyond a shipping receipt, I’m not afraid to admit that I need support. A huge selling point for me was Minted’s free concierge service. Over an email or a virtual call, their team can help me find the perfect stationery design, customize it, get the wording just right, and answer what I anticipate to be 1.2 million questions along the way.

The wedding aesthetic showdown:

We went into venue hunting with an open mind to allow us to find the most budget-friendly option in Chicago that fit our guest-count needs. At this point, I put choosing our wedding aesthetic on pause because I didn’t want to pigeonhole us into a certain venue when there might be more affordable options out there. We landed on a large, refurbished factory that leans industrial. The space is absolutely beautiful but because we’re not dead set on an industrial vibe, we want to bring in some elements to help warm it up and take it to the next level. Beyond elevating the space, we want our wedding to be one to remember, and as a professional wedding guest who has attended 20 weddings in the last three years, I know that the fine details are the ones that make all the difference. After hours of combing through my Pinterest inspo, here are the three wedding aesthetics we’re choosing between:

Option 1: Coastal

coastal wedding mood board
Graphics by: Caitlin Schneider

In a world where we didn’t live in Chicago, we didn’t have so many friends and family members that we want to inconvenience with travel, and we had all of the money in the world, I could see us getting married in Cape Cod with old-money undertones and a less-than-modest yacht as our exit vehicle. With our very strong lack of old money, the next best thing is bringing the coast to us with this “City Coastal” vibe that serves up the whisper of an East Coast wedding without all of the pesky sand. Picture this: White linen draping, cane seating, and slate blue accents to balance and soften the venue’s bones. And to kick off this coastal-meets-urban aesthetic, this invitation suite from Minted is absolutely perfect as our guests’ first impression:

Option 2: Italian Garden Party

Whenever people ask me about my ancestry, my revelation that I’m 50 percent Italian is always followed by “and what else?” Be it my blonde-hair-blue-eyed appearance or the fact I’ve never traveled outside of the United States, I’m always fighting for my life trying to prove my Italian roots. When I saw a bride bring the Italian Garden Party to an industrial space in Chicago last year, my jaw collapsed to the floor and I fell head over heels in love. While we may be in different tax brackets (helloooooo florals), I absolutely love how this aesthetic can bring color and an organic feel into an otherwise industrial venue. By leaning into lemon accents, greenery for florals, and nods to my Italian heritage (Aperol Spritz as a wecome drink, anyone?), this aesthetic might just be a front-runner. And with this garden-party-inspired printing from Minted, I’m nearly sold:

Option 3: Old Hollywood Speakeasy

As much as I love a classic black-and-white aesthetic and lean into minimalism, in a perfect world, you only get married once, and I really want to use this opportunity to have some more fun with the overall tone and feel of the celebration. Enter: Old Hollywood glam which can take my affinity for classic a step further. Truth be told, my fiancé and I decided upon our venue while at our favorite date-night spot, and while taking in the restaurant’s speakeasy-esque decor, we entertained the idea of leaning into an Old Hollywood-meets-speakeasy aesthetic for our wedding. This theme would pair well with the masculinity of our venue (vs. working against it), and with detailing like red velvet, vintage lamps, pearls, and this invitation suite from Minted, we can certainly make it happen:

The ’90s are having a moment, from fashion to music to TV and movies. Nostalgia has become a form of social currency, especially when the internet makes it easier than ever to indulge in it. But while younger generations try on the decade as a trend, us ’90s kids revisit it for the familiarity.

Many of the best comfort shows and movies are from the ’90s. The hits just kept on coming—rom-coms, blockbusters, and teen movies were all at their peak. And some of the best Disney films came out in the ’90s, too. In short, there were a lot of great ’90s movies. And for those of us who grew up during that time, rewatching our favorite films takes us back to a simpler time and place. But it’s also an opportunity to experience them again with fresh eyes. God knows kids’ movies are full of hidden adult humor, so parents won’t get bored while watching. Now we get to know what was so funny, too.

So, as we all navigate through this plot twist we call adulthood, let’s examine some of the ’90s movies that are worth revisiting now that you’re an adult.

1. Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

Stream on Disney+

As a kid, Mrs. Doubtfire was just another zany Robin Williams character to me. Sure, the movie was funny for its slapstick moments (like when Mrs. Doubtfire’s rubber breasts catch on fire), but I only understood it on a very basic level. It was about a divorced dad who didn’t want another man taking over his family—much like other ’90s films of the time (like The Santa Clause or Liar, Liar).

But rewatching Mrs. Doubtfire as an adult is absolutely hilarious. There is SO. MUCH. INNEUNDO. Some of the best scenes are Daniel’s (as Mrs. Doubtfire) exchanges with Pierce Brosnan’s character, Stu. Every chance he gets, Daniel tries to embarrass Stu by talking about something sexual. When he first meets Stu as Mrs. Doubtfire, he makes a joke about a fancy car compensating for small genitals (which totally went over my head as a kid). And the whole restaurant scene is dirty humor at its best, with Mrs. Doubtfire dropping colorful names for sex like “Rumpleforeskin” and “Cunning Linguistics.”

There are also so many great movie impressions from Robin Williams that now make way more sense since I’ve seen a lot more movies. And his drag transformations are just impeccable. Plus, there’s even an appearance by Williams’ brother, Robert Todd Williams, as the bartender at the pool where Mrs. Doubtfire throws a lime at Stu’s head, or as she calls it, “a run by fruiting.”

2. Never Been Kissed (1999)

Stream on Starz

Never Been Kissed came out when I was just about to turn 13, so at the time, I couldn’t really relate to Josie’s high school or adult experiences. I did like the funny and romantic parts, though—and who didn’t love ’90s Drew Barrymore?

But this movie has a lot to say on a rewatch as an adult. For one thing, it’s a reminder of how cruel high school kids can be to each other, especially to the nerds, weirdos, and outcasts of the world. But as Josie says in her poignant prom speech, “It won’t matter if you were the prom queen, or the quarterback of the football team, or the biggest nerd in school.” In the real world, we all have a chance to make something of ourselves every day.

Never Been Kissed points out how high school is just a model for conformity and that sometimes nerds are the only ones brave enough to actually be themselves. And oftentimes, those are the people who really end up succeeding, living without barriers and not having to measure up to other people’s standards.

Even beyond getting the film’s lesson, it’s also just a fun rewatch to see all the various actors you may not have known when it first came out. Besides Drew Barrymore, Never Been Kissed’s cast also includes Molly Shannon, John C. Reilly, and Jessica Alba.

3. Now and Then (1995)

Rent on Prime Video

Before Sex and the City, pre-teen girls in the ’90s were figuring out which Now and Then character they were. Whether you were a Roberta, Samantha, Teeny, or Chrissy said a lot about you. As a kid, it was easy to relate to the girls’ friendships with one another—their run-ins with boys, their childhood games, and even their cemetery seances (although we preferred light as a feather, stiff as a board). But as an adult, you can better understand the movie’s deeper levels.

Not only is Now and Then a coming-of-age story, it’s one that celebrates female friendships and all the ups and downs that come with them. It also shows us that things aren’t always as they seem, especially when you’re a kid. Much of the true world is hidden from us until we become adults and “grow out” of things. And although we’ll constantly have challenges thrown at us in both childhood and adulthood, as Crazy Pete tells Samantha, “Things will happen in your life that you can’t stop, but that’s no reason to shut out the world.” That’s good advice at any age.

4. Ferngully (1992)

Stream on Tubi

Ferngully was one of the few non-Disney movies of the ’90s that I actually loved, mainly because it was about fairies. I also think it fueled my love for bats because Batty (played by Robin Williams, of course) was such a loveable weirdo. But although Ferngully features fairies and other creatures of the forest, it’s really an environmentalist film at its core, and it isn’t afraid to point out all the horrible things humans have done to the Earth. Ferngully tackles deforestation, pollution, acid rain, animal testing, the perils of human greed, and our insatiable lust for fossil fuels. It’s incredibly relevant even today as we still grapple with these issues and the ever-escalating impacts of climate change.

As an adult, it’s also pretty hilarious how some of the songs have thinly veiled sexual innuendo hidden amongst the lyrics (and their delivery). Baddie Hexxus is played by Tim Curry, and his song, Toxic Love, would have made Dr. Frank-N-Furter proud. Even the lizard’s song If I’m Gonna Eat Somebody had my eyebrows raised when he called Zak “a welcome little snack.”

5. Hook (1991)

Stream on Hulu

Can you tell I loved Robin Williams? Hook has Williams playing a grown-up Peter Pan who’s now a husband and father of two. But after he returns to London to visit an elderly Wendy (Maggie Smith), Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) kidnaps his kids and takes them to Neverland to bait Peter into returning and settling their rivalry. While there are many Peter Pan adaptations, this version was always one of my favorites. There was plenty to enjoy as a kid, including Robin Williams’ humor, but as an adult, Hook’s underlying themes are very visible.

In true Steven Spielberg form, Hook shows the damage an absent parent can do to a child. And the importance of spending time with your kids (which was super relevant at a time when many of our parents were absent or getting a divorce). On the other hand, as an adult with children (or thinking about having them) of our own, we can better understand Peter and his wife’s anguish at their children being taken and understand just how far they’d go to get them back—even learn to fly again in Peter’s case.

6. Empire Records (1995)

Stream on Hulu

A lot of my friends were obsessed with Empire Records as preteens and teens. It idealizes working at a record store and being surrounded by music and your peers. Plus, it has a banging alt-rock soundtrack. Now it just makes me miss the ’90s when record stores and rock music reigned supreme. As an adult, I also appreciate The Beatles reference at the end when the band plays on the rooftop. And the fact that Rex Manning Day is April 8, the day Kurt Cobain died. But aside from all that, Empire Records also deals with deeper issues, like gambling, drug abuse, suicide, and gun violence.

Upon rewatching, one of my favorite moments is Deb’s mock funeral at the store. It used to bother me that everyone ended up talking more about themselves than Deb. But now, that moment highlights the importance of vulnerability in connecting with others. They’re trying to tell her, in their own ways, that she’s not alone. And everyone is going through something, whether they show it or not. Definitely give it a rewatch, especially if you want to see baby-faced Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger.

7. Pleasantville (1998)

Rent on Prime Video

As a pre-teen watching Pleasantville, I was more interested in the novelty of getting stuck in your favorite TV show than really understanding the film’s deeper meanings. And the scenes where some characters were in black and white while others were in color were pure movie magic to me.

I used to think that the movie was just a commentary on the era of Leave it to Beaver and nuclear families, but there’s a lot more going on. It’s ultimately about the human condition. As Tobey Mcguire says in the courtroom scene, there are so many things better than just pleasant. Human emotion is a spectrum. And you’ll never progress in life if you don’t get outside your comfort zone and feel your feelings.

Once the characters in the film start allowing themselves to take risks, expand their horizons, and feel, they turn from black and white to color. There are so many ways to further interpret that physical change. But there’s one thing I definitely only get now as an adult—reading books and falling in love (or lust) can indeed expand your horizons.

8. Tank Girl (1995)

Stream on Tubi

Tank Girl is rated R but flew under many a parent’s radar since it was technically a comic book movie. Part Mad Max, part Deadpool, the film is a dystopian, punk rock fever dream that also probably fueled my fear of kangaroos (What? They’re weird). But even as a kid, it was fun to watch for its hyper-violence, bad language, and killer soundtrack.

It wasn’t obvious to me in the ’90s, but Tank Girl was unapologetically feminist at a very misogynistic time in movies. Not only does it have a female protagonist, it has a very edgy one at that—one who talks about her sexuality, doesn’t conform to conventional standards of beauty, and fights with men (and usually wins). Plus, she’s not afraid to call out pervy guys, which I definitely appreciate more now as an adult.

Unsurprisingly, the film also has some pretty queer undertones. Even though Tank Girl is with Booga the Ripper in both the comics and movie, many people ship Tank Girl and Jet Girl (played by Naomi Watts in the film). Looking back, though, I’m pretty sure she’d hump just about anything that moved. Tank Girl was a progressive role model on all fronts of gender and sexuality.

9. Toy Story (1995)

Stream on Disney+

Sure, on the surface, Toy Story is a movie about toys that come alive and have adventures. Throw in a bit of humor, some recognizable voices, plus the Disney Pixar brand, and you’ve got yourself a hit kids movie. And years later, the Toy Story franchise is still going strong, with a fifth movie currently in the works.

It’s unsurprising, though, when you realize toys are extensions of their kid. We make up stories with them; they travel with us, and oftentimes, they sleep with us. But that’s why watching Toy Story as an adult just hits differently.

Woody’s not just jealous of the new toy Andy gets for his birthday—he’s worried about being abandoned and replaced by Buzz. Sounds familiar, no? How many of us have had that very same fear or wondered if we were good enough to receive someone’s love? As corny as it sounds, watching Woody deal with and accept change is kind of healing because it’s something we all have to do eventually. Plus, it’s pretty clear on a rewatch that Woody could use some good old-fashioned therapy for his anxious attachment style. And if that’s not relatable as a millennial, I don’t know what is.

Sometimes, getting away for the weekend is the best way to reset for the week ahead, especially if you’re in need of a change in scenery. As someone who consistently struggles with packing for longer trips, the idea of only having to pack for a couple of nights already sets me at ease. Next on my list? Finding somewhere affordable that’s also within driving distance or a short plane ride away. If you live on the West Coast, there are so many great destinations that are not only budget-friendly but—dare I say—more fun than the typical travel hot spots you might think of immediately.

With these West Coast destinations, you can easily hop in the car or board your flight on a Friday, spend the weekend exploring, and be back home and ready for the week ahead by Sunday evening. So grab your weekender bag: These are the best places to visit on the West Coast for an affordable weekend getaway.

1. Ventura, California

west coast destinations
Source: Pexels | Isaac Taylor

While I love a Malibu getaway, Ventura (located about an hour up the coast) is much more affordable and low-key. This surf town offers miles of gorgeous beaches and a casual seaside vibe. Grab a bite and drink at VenTiki Lounge & Lanai on Main Street, or head to Ventura Beach and sample oysters at The Jolly Oyster, located right on the sand. For something more active, the Ventura River Bike Trail is a must for bikers and walkers alike. The miles-long path offers scenic views of the area in a constantly changing landscape.

You also can’t beat sitting on the beach and watching the surfers, and Surfers Point at Seaside Park is a great place to do so. If you feel like partaking, you’ll find plenty of rental shops where you can grab a board and supplies. If you’re looking for scenic views, the Ventura Botanical Garden is a serene place to see the town and the sprawling ocean from above. While the garden closes before sundown, you can easily walk down the hill to Serra Cross to admire panoramic sunset views before heading back into town.

Where to stay: Inn on the Beach (from $170 a night), Ventura Beach Marriott (from $184)

2. Bodega Bay, California

west coast destinations
Source: Unsplash | Rachel Faller

If you live in northern California, Bodega Bay is one of the best hidden gems on the coast for a relaxing weekend. You’ll notice quite a few references to the filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock in the town, which provided the setting for his iconic (and chilling) movie The Birds. Whether you’re a Hitchcock fan or not, experiencing Bodega Bay will be anything but chilling, as the seaside town is actually quite cozy. But if you do want to experience the chill of cold-water surfing, there are plenty of wetsuit and board rental options in town. Or if you prefer to see the ocean from land, the Pinnacle Gulch Trail leads around the surrounding hillsides, ending right on the beach for a long sandy stroll.

To refuel, snag a table with a view at The Tides Wharf & Restaurant or grab a quick bite at their snack bar while watching the adorable local seals sunbathe on the dock. If you’re into wine tasting, Gourmet Au Bay on the north end of the bay has plenty of local options, as well as a full menu to enjoy while taking in the waterfront view. For a more traditional winery experience, head just south of town to Sonoma Coast Vineyards. Step up to the bar for a guided wine tasting, or pick up a bottle of wine and a charcuterie picnic box to enjoy outside on the hill overlooking Bodega Bay.

Where to stay: The Inn at the Tides (from $195 a night), The Lodge at Bodega Bay (from $227)

3. Long Beach Peninsula, Washington

For those looking to explore the Pacific Northwest, there are plenty of beautiful locations off the coast of Washington. For unbeatable Pacific Ocean views, head to Long Beach Peninsula and snap a pic in front of the sign that designates it as the “World’s Longest Beach.” While that claim is not technically correct (it’s the world’s longest beach on a peninsula), the endless stretch of sand is definitely a sight to see. This is the type of beach where you’ll want to sprawl out on the sand and relax all day long. But if you want to get in some extra activity, the nearby Discovery Trail is a perfect place to stretch your legs on its 8.5-mile paved path.

For another break from the beach, Long Beach Peninsula offers several museums and historical sites to explore, including the North Head Lighthouse, where you can enjoy panoramic ocean views from atop the cliffs. Make sure to also check out the World Kite Museum, which houses over 1,500 kites from around the world. Afterward, rent your own kite to fly on the nearby beach. When you’re ready for a snack, Pickled Fish is a go-to spot for local seafood, craft cocktails, and stunning views of the ocean. And if your priority in the mornings is coffee, check out Bold Coffee Art & Framing, where you can admire some local art and caffeinate at the same time.

Where to stay: Boardwalk Cottages (from $109 a night), Inn at Discovery Coast (from $157)

4. Morro Bay, California

west coast destinations
Source: Unsplash | Nikhil Mistry

If you’ve ever driven along the Central Coast of California, you might have noticed the iconic Morro Rock, a huge volcanic mound that sits just off the coast. Just inland from this 576-foot-tall landmark lies a little seaside town with a perfect vibe for anyone who loves the ocean and local art. Of course, the most popular place to hang out is the area around Morro Rock, including the surrounding beach and ecological preserve. Before you hit the beach and take in the views, walk down the Embarcadero waterfront district to do some souvenir shopping or grab a bag of saltwater taffy. Don’t miss the otter viewing area on the nearby T Pier, where you can watch the otters live their best lives as you relish in the bay views.

For a break from the beach, drive east about 15 minutes to the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden, or head north on Highway 1 about 30 miles to tour Hearst Castle, a fabulous estate built by William Randolph Hearst. After heading back to town for dinner, check out Blue Sky Bistro on the Bay for a spectacular sunset view and live music.

Where to stay: 456 Embarcadero Inn & Suites (from $90 a night), Inn at Rose’s Landing (from $175)

5. Pismo Beach, California

west coast destinations
Source: Pexels | Lindsey Garrett

Just south of Morro Bay, Pismo Beach has an energetic vibe, with plenty of local events and activities to take part in. The Pismo Beach Pier Plaza is the center of the action and often hosts events like wine-tasting pop-ups, car shows, jazz festivals, and the annual Pismo Beach Clam Festival, which has been going on since the 1940s. For a more low-key activity, Pismo Beach is a great place for whale watching, as gray and humpback whales are often spotted in the area. So if you, like me, love seeing whales jump out of the ocean and cackling in pure delight, this is definitely the spot to settle in on the beach with your binoculars in hand.

If you feel like hopping in a car, the famous Madonna Inn, known for its eclectic-themed rooms and storybook atmosphere, is just a 15-minute drive away. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s a fun place to wander, grab a drink, or book a spa treatment if you’re feeling luxurious. The signature spa facial starts at $150. When you return to Pismo, grab a bite to eat near the boardwalk (Sunsets at Pismo is just one of many delicious options on the pier) and take an evening walk along the sand to finish your night.

Where to stay: Sandcastle Hotel on the Beach (from $160 a night), Sea Venture Beach Hotel & Restaurant (from $184)

6. Bandon, Oregon

west coast destinations
Source: Unsplash | Peter Robbins

For a magical seaside escape that feels more off the beaten path, make Bandon, Oregon your next road trip destination. Although the town itself is very small, the spectacular views and secluded beaches are definitely worth a visit. Stroll down the beach just steps away from the main street to take in the area’s unique rock formations and spot some wildlife. Back in town, you can check out Bandon’s Farmers and Artisan Market, which is open on Fridays and Saturdays and offers a wide selection of local produce, baked goods, and handmade crafts. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a bike or throw on your hiking boots and check out the many scenic trails just a short drive away.

After a good night’s sleep, grab a cup of coffee at Bandon Coffee Cafe before wandering the shops and taking in the outdoor art around the Old Town shopping district. In the evenings, Bandon’s nightlife is quiet and serene, but the local restaurant scene does not disappoint. If you’re in the mood for Italian, Alloro Wine Bar & Restaurant is the perfect place to grab a glass of wine and some house-made pasta. Or if the night is warm, pull up a seat on the upper balcony of The Loft Restaurant & Bar, where you can enjoy views of the marina and a cozy atmosphere.

Where to stay: Bandon Marina Inn (from $86 a night), Bandon Inn (from $133)

7. Paso Robles, California

west coast destinations
Source: Unsplash | Hari Nandakumar

Paso Robles is one of California’s oldest wine regions, but it often gets overlooked in favor of more well-known areas like Sonoma and Napa. However, you’ll find some incredible family-owned wineries here that have amazing wine-tasting rooms. Even if you’re not big into wine, the scenic views of the rolling hills are enough to warrant a visit. For the best place to stay in Paso Robles, book a room at one of the wineries, many of which include a curated bed and breakfast experience. If you’re just looking to check out wineries and distilleries during the day, Croad Vineyards and Re:Find Distillery offer excellent experiences.

Once you’ve gotten your wine fix, head into the main town square to visit the Paso Market Walk, a modern take on a farmer’s market where you can sample local foods and purchase local crafts. For dinner, make a reservation at Taste, an intimate eatery that offers a fusion of different cuisines. Afterward, take a serene walk along the nearby Salinas River Walk, a two-mile trail that meanders along the river.

Where to stay: The Edenhouse Vineyard (from $125 a night), Allegretto Vineyard Resort Paso Robles (from $191)

8. Cannon Beach, Oregon

west coast destinations
Source: Unsplash | Rod M

Cannon Beach is one of the best West Coast destinations for anyone who loves to take their dog with them on vacation. The city’s namesake beach is dog-friendly, as are many of the shops, restaurants, and surrounding hiking trails. Leash up your pup to stroll along the sand and catch a view of Haystack Rock, a huge sea stack that rises 235 feet out of the ocean. To work up a bigger sweat, explore the nearby Ecola State Park, where you’ll find several miles of hiking trails stretching along the coastline (many of them paved). And for any surfers out there, if the waves are good, you can rent all the gear you’ll need at one of the many surf shops in town.

If you’re looking for a more relaxing activity, head into town to peruse the many art galleries and shops, or take an art class at House of Orange and create your own work of art. In the evenings, grab a drink at Pelican Brewing, which has a spacious dining area and is just steps away from the beach. After happy hour, check out Anna’s Table, a source-to-table restaurant that celebrates the area’s regional cuisine.

Where to stay: Hallmark Resort & Spa (from $164 a night), Schooner’s Cove Inn (from $259)

9. Ojai, California

west coast destinations
Source: Unsplash | Johanna Zender

Ojai is one of those places that feels like you’re stepping into another time and place. There’s really no other town like it, thanks to its mixture of interesting shops, endless bike and walking paths, and wellness retreats. This is the ultimate West Coast destination for anyone who needs to recharge and reconnect with friends or a partner. While you wander down Ojai Avenue and check out shops, make sure to try a kombucha tasting at Revel or a honey tasting at Heavenly Honey Company. A must-see classic in the area is Bart’s Books, an outdoor bookstore that has tons of charm and whimsy—and a lot of photo ops for the book lovers out there.

As someone who loves bees, but usually tries to steer clear of them, I was surprised that the beekeeping experience at Ojai Valley Inn was one of my favorite activities in Ojai. Fitted in a full beekeeper suit for protection, you’ll tour the local beehives with an expert. This might sound nerve-wracking, but for me, the humming and presence of the bees was actually calming. Afterward, head into town for a delicious meal and dessert at The Dutchess, a Burmese-Californian restaurant that has quickly become one of the most popular spots in town.

Where to stay: Caravan Outpost (from $190 a night), The Emerald Iguana Inn (from $259)

10. Joshua Tree, California

west coast destinations
Source: Unsplash | Amanda Murphy

If you’re looking for a desert adventure instead of the beach, Joshua Tree is the perfect getaway. Just north of the slightly more expensive Palm Springs, Joshua Tree offers a rustic and quiet atmosphere with endless desert views studded with the trees the town is named for. Nights in Joshua Tree are especially peaceful, and you’ll be amazed by the amount of stars you’re able to see on a clear night. As such, it’s a great place for camping or glamping, a popular alternative to staying in a traditional hotel.

During the day, make sure to check out the sprawling Joshua Tree National Park. With endless trails, lookout points, rock climbing, and horseback riding, you can honestly spend an entire weekend just exploring the park and still feel like you have more to see. For a meal and music, it’s worth the 15-minute drive to see the famous restaurant Pappy & Harriet’s, located in Pioneer Town. It’s almost always crowded, but it’s worth the wait to enjoy the unique atmosphere while you cool down from the desert heat.

Where to stay: Joshua Tree Village Campground (from $115 a night), The Castle House Estate (from $139)

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past several years, you probably know by now that we’re in the throes of a wave of Western fashion. Cowboy boots, “coastal cowgirl” TikTok trends—cowboy-inspired fashion has been taking over both streetwear and runways for several seasons now. Between the arrival of Beyonce’s eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter, and those photos of Bella Hadid, it’s safe to say that cowboy-core is far from over—in fact, it may be only getting started.

While Western fashion is currently trending, many of the pieces that it incorporates are innately pretty classic. Denim, bold stitching, suede, and leather—they’re about as timeless as they come. As we gear up to listen to Texas Hold ‘Em on repeat, we’re prepared to enter our cowgirl era with reckless abandon. Here’s how to nail the trend this season:

Denim on Denim

A no-fail way to capture the very essence of Western fashion? Denim-on-denim. With top options like button-ups, corsets, and vests, a Canadian tuxedo is a way to have fun and inject your personality into your style. Finish your look off with a Western-inspired belt or boots to amp up the cowboy-core even higher.

Lots of Fringe

It’s official: Fringe has entered the scene. The detail was seen all over street style shots from last month’s New York Fashion Week, and it’s hard to resist the playful, flouncy vibe that it captures. Suede fringe details on jackets, tops, and bags give a chic, modern take on Western dressing.

Studded Details

With the rise—and subsequent sell-out–of the Khaite Benny Belt, it became clear that studs are going to be an inescapable micro-trend of 2024. Opting for a studded or grommet-adorned accessory is an easy way to inject a bit of Western wear into your existing wardrobe.
